Originally formed in 1992,
the New York Opera Project, Inc., also known as ‘NYOP’,
was formed as a company that produces concert performances
of operatic and vocal recital/chamber compositions
for the general public. The NYOP was formed in the
Spring of 1992 and gave its first performance, Puccini's
Madama Butterfly, on December 7th of that year.
Subsequent performances have included Gounod's
Faust, Puccini's
Tosca, Mozart's
The Magic Flute, Verdi's
Rigoletto, Wagner's
Das Rheingold (in association
with the NY Wagner Society), Strauss' Salome
and Ariadne auf Naxos,
Vanessa, Hansel and Gretel,
Don Giovanni, Amahl and the Night Visitors, Carlisle Floyd's Susannah,
the New York Opera Project Awards Concert, and
Rossini's Stabat Mater performed
with the Hunter Symphony Orchestra.
The NYOP was formed to help elevate and enhance the
level of singing of classical vocal music and to provide
these performances at an affordable price. The works
performed are representative of a wide range of historical
periods, musical styles, and languages (all performances
are given in the original language of the opera). This
variety provides a training ground and opportunity for
artists and other individuals who are committed to careers
in the performing arts (singers, pianists, instrumentalists,
conductors, producers, directors, composers, agents,
administrators, etc.). It provides a public forum for
the advancement of the professional careers of ethnically
diverse, operatic/vocal artists at various stages of
their respective careers.
Through performances, educational outreach and informal
lecture-concerts, NYOP provides emerging artists and
audiences with an opportunity to become familiar with
a vast repertoire, including those styles of performance
threatened with extinction or intense alteration, thus
promoting the expansion and appreciation in America
of the great vocal traditions.
It is with great pleasure that we take this opportunity
to introduce you to the New York Opera Project which
we feel is an exciting new addition to New York City’s
musical life.
